When the soil is workable...what to plant?

Here in zone 3, we have such a short growing season and cool temperatures, so it is important to choose plants that are well-suited all the conditions. In April, it is still early in the season, so it is best to focus on cool-season crops that can tolerate frost and cold weather as we know typically to wait to plant everything else until  May Long weekend. Here are some suggestions for what to plant in April in Zone 3:

  1. Peas: Peas are a great crop to plant in April because they can handle cool temperatures and frost. They are also relatively easy to grow and can be harvested in early summer.

  2. Spinach: Spinach is another cool-season crop that can be planted in April. It grows quickly and can be harvested in as little as 4-6 weeks.

  3. Lettuce: Lettuce is a fast-growing crop that can be planted in April and harvested in as little as 30 days. It is also very versatile and can be grown in containers or in the ground.

  4. Kale: Kale is a cold-hardy crop that can be planted in April and harvested in early summer. It is also very nutritious and can be used in a variety of dishes.

  5. Radishes: Radishes are a fast-growing crop that can be planted in April and harvested in as little as 3-4 weeks. They are also very easy to grow and can be grown in containers or in the ground.

  6. Carrots: Carrots can be planted in April, but they take longer to mature than some of the other crops on this list. They are still a good option for Zone 3 because they can handle the cool temperatures.

These are just a few suggestions for what to plant in April in Zone 3. Be sure to always check your local weather conditions and what's coming around the corner. You never know what weather might come your way - especially in Alberta!
